IMPLANTS
An Option in Smile Restoration
|
Nothing can take the place of a healthy set of teeth, but when disease or an accident ends in tooth loss, it's good to know you have some options in restoring your smile. For some people, dental implants offer a feel and look very similar to their own teeth.

What are Implants?© Implants are metal posts or frames that are surgically placed beneath your gums. After placement, the implants fuse to the bone of your jaw and act as artificial tooth roots. Replacement teeth -singularly or grouped on a bridge or denture - are then mounted to the implant.

| What are the benefits of Implants?© One key advantage of implants is that they fuse to the jawbone, offering stable support to artificial teeth. Dentures, bridges or individual teeth mounted to the implants won't slip or shift in your mouth - an especially important benefit when eating and speaking.
This secure fit also helps replacement teeth feel more natural then conventional bridges or dentures.
Some people may find the stability of implant-supported dentures to be more comfortable than removable dentures.

Can anyone have Implants?© Candidates need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant - and they must commit to keeping these structures healthy. Meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits are critical to the long-term success of dental implants.
Because implant placement involves more than one oral surgery, candidates must be in overall good health.
Certain chronic diseases - like diabetes, osteoporosis or chronic sinus problems - may interfere with proper healing and could prevent the bone from attaching to the implant. Long-term medication use and certain behaviors, like smoking, also may affect the stability of the implant over time.

| Your Dental Evaluation Knowing your dental history helps Dr. Loewen decide if you are a good candidate for implants. A dental exam and tests help determine where the implants would be anchored in your jaw. After developing a treatment plan, Dr. Loewen presents you with the information you will need to decide if implants are right for you.
Your Dental Exam
Dr. Loewen examines the structure and health of your mouth, jaws, head and neck. He then studies the shape of your mouth and bite (the way your teeth meet when you chew). Next he makes models (plaster molds) of your upper and lower jaws to reveal their exact alignment. If you wear a complete or partial denture, Dr. Loewen may also evaluate the way it fits in your mouth.
Diagnostic Tests
X-rays and other types of imaging tests provide information on the health of your teeth and jaws. If you have an ongoing medical condition, such as diabetes, you may also have blood tests to make sure your condition is under control before treatment begins.
Your Treatment Plan
After the evaluation, Dr. Loewen will discuss a treatment plan with you. If dental implants are likely to work for you, the overall cost and time frame for the procedure are outlined. You will also be told about any dental work or special surgical procedures you may need before the implant process can begin.

| What are Implants made of?© The implant itself is made of metal - usually titanium as it has proven to be very compatible with bone and other tissues. The surfaces of some implants are treated with a substance that helps them adhere to the bone.
Just like conventional crowns, bridges or dentures, the replacement teeth mounted on the implants are made of porcelain or porcelain and metal.
Implants Are Like Teeth You natural teeth are stable biting and chewing surfaces because they are supported by your jawbone. This will also be true of your dental implants. Successful dental implants become firmly embedded in the jaw, providing a chewing surface almost as secure as that of natural teeth. Top - Home - Contact Us |
